Nationalism and Patriotism Is Not Inherently Bad. What Is Bad, and Sometimes Evil, Is When a Leader Paints Opposition to Him as Being Unpatritoic...

...and instead demands unquestioned loyalty and devotion.

I've never understand the need for patriotism nor nationalism.

@Entwistle patriotism is the sense of community. Without that sense of community there would be no law or order within a country.

Heck there might not even be a country, since it all separate individuals. It's the sence of being proud at what you have done as a community. As a group thing. Not as a individual.

Think community when you think of patriotism. Just on a bigger scale.

You can disagree with certain aspects of the community, yet still be proud of the overall community.

This is where her post comes in. That disagreement part.

Pride is likely what you don't understand. Don't understand the word pride, you don't understand patriotism.

An individual without pride, is a very sad thing. It does unfortunately happen.

@DeWayfarer I love and care about my community, however I'm not patriotic about it.
I have pride of course, just not in my country.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Entwistle
community -> pride;
country -> patriotic.

Didn't say they were exactly the same things. Just a larger "scope".

Yet you said
I've never understand the need for patriotism nor nationalism.

The community is dependent on the country. It's how the community survives itself. No patriotism, no community.

Think of how your nearest state highway was both built and is now maintained. It's mostly paid by the country.

Without that state highway your community is gone.

That's just one thing.

Yet do you wish to get rid of the state highway?

Think what you saying, before you answer. 🤣

No state highway, then no community.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer The motorways, roads here are maintained by taxes.
I have pride in my community but none in my nation. I see no need. I see them as a stupid concepts.. patriotism and nationalism i mean.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Entwistle Yeh but which taxes fund the majority of those same highways! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Even in the highest taxed states it's mostly from federal sources. Heck here we just had such a issue. A good number of highways were wiped out from flash flood. And the work won't get done until congress gets a speaker.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer I think road tax funds most of them. I don't drive so I don't pay road taxes.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Entwistle I don't drive!!! But I do use public transportation!

No roads no transportation of any type. Heck even the railway got major damage. So little trucking or rail delivery of many products.

We live in a centralized society. No City or State is independent of the other.

You hurt your own community when you do such things. Both coming in and out.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer I'm not hurting any community by not driving..or not being patriotic or nationalistic.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Entwistle yet you rely on everything else that's dependent on things like roads and other transportation means.

Even just on sewer, water and whatever means of power you have. Something goes wrong with your solar power or even generator you must rely on the outside to get replacement parts.

And that's just transportation! I'm not talking about the items needed to repair anything. And if it's not fixable what then? 🤷🏻‍♂️
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer I rely on many things,as we all do. There's still no need for patriotism or nationalism to enter the equation.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Entwistle no sence of patriotism, no sence of community. One doesn't come without the other. No patriotism no means of repair. No means of other new products.

In other words stagnation! And death of the community.

I've actually seen this happen in the mid west. Whole communities are ghost towns now. Because they didn't want to even apply for federal aid.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer You are making a link that doesn't exist.

Was going to give some better links yet the articles were discontinued. Thanks to msn!

@Entwistle ok! Pick your own state...

@DeWayfarer Your link between patriotism, nationalism and taxing roads, believing in community etc..is tenuous at best.
Most people work to earn a wage..most don't work due to any sense of nationalism/patriotism.
I'm not searching any link you post as I already know I disagree with you.
Enjoy your day sir!

@Entwistle have a good day. No point then.
