Whenever and Wherever a Crisis Erupts, Officials Ask, "Where Are the Carriers?"
The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) and its battle group has already deployed to the eastern Mediterranean.
A second carrier battle group, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), is already at sea and will shift from European command to the eastern Mediterranean as well. The Eisenhower strike force includes the guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG-58) and three guided missile destroyers. With their BGM-109 Tomahawk missiles, the Philippine Sea and the destroyers can not only hit targets anywhere in Syria but in western Iran as well.
The Philippine Sea is a Ticonderoga-class cruiser with its Aegis air and missile defense system and, along with the destroyers, can be expected to bolster Israeli air defense against possible missile attacks from Syria and/or Iran. The amphibious assault ship, USS Bataan (LHD-5), with its contigent of Marines, is expected to join up with the Eisenhower and Ford.
As I speculated last week, another carrier battle group will now head to the Arabian Sea. But it won't be USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) as I first thought. Instead, it will be the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) carrier battle group. Why not the Reagan? Because that carrier has instead set sail from its home port in Japan to South Korea to support our allies there and to send a strong message to Pyongyang: "Don't mess with us!"
The United Kingdom is also sending several Royal Navy ships as well as survelliance aircraft to the eastern Mediterranean to help track and interdict any attempt by foreign powers to ship further weapons to Hamas.
