Gov. Thomas Dewey got himself into trouble on the campaign trail when his train suddenly backed up after overshooting the water tank at a whistle stop in Beaucoup, Illnois in 1948.
"That's the first lunatic I've had for an engineer," Dewey said. "He probably ought to be shot at sunrise but I guess we can let him off because no one was hurt."
World War II had ended only three years earlier so the remark stirred memories of Mussolini.
