When bigotry becomes virtue

So a couple of days ago this nugget of weirdnes was unleashed onto the American public... and the world (thanks to the internet).

https://twitter.com/DeSantisWarRoom/status/1674899610379116546

... When I first saw this, I thought I was watching a Southpark episode. And I've said it many times, if you are engaged in a serious act and it looks or feels like a Southpark episode, then maybe it's time for some selfreflection. But of course, this movement has ditched selfreflection a long time ago. It's way easier to label yourself with adjectives like: "good people", "law abiding citizens", "patriotic American", ... then to actually live up to what you espouse to be. By just labeling yourself what ever you want, without putting the effort in to live up to it, you just saved yourself a lot of work and headaches that come from facing your own human flaws. It's just easier to pretend, then to be I guess. Espescially if you have a large groups that is circlejerking in that little echochamber they have closed themselves into... because reality is just to hard and to complex, and it's not entertaining enough to take the time and try to understand things that are on a higher level of complexity.

Anyway... part of the criticism about these types of politicians is that they are not talking about policies. But in this case, that's not really true. It's actually pointing at policy. I'm not sure how this policy helps someone, or makes anyones life better, ... but I guess ditching on a minority community that the politicians base doesn't care about, doesn't know about, fears and has labeled "evil" because of some traditionalist narrative does make you feel better about yourself. And the harder you dish on a community that is politically weak, the more the "good" "law abiding" "patriotic" citizens will love you for it. Because it feels good to pretend that everyone that is not you is also worst then you. Because if you want to be "good" there needs to be something "bad". Categories don't work, if they are not inherently exclusionary. And since labeling is easy, you don't really need to put any of the work in or give any fact based justification. You can just label an entire segment of the population "evil", and these people didn't need to have done anything bad except being themselves so that the other group can consider itself "good" because they are themselves and they are not them. Which is... well, pretty much the definition of bigotry. Where you treat a group of people, as a homogenous pile of negative stereotypes. Often in favor of your own perceived standing of yourself and your ingroup. And this kind of behavior, in this movement, becomes a "virtue" to brag about... you know, the biggest bigot is probably the best "good" "law abiding" and most "patriotic" American. So here you have a politician, signaling to the electorate that he is the biggest bigot and therefore deserves your vote in the upcomming primairy. Because... that makes sense if you are inside this lazy mindset of self idolatry in which bigotry can become a virtue that you can show off with.

Than there is the weird imagery... Like, what age category is this pampering too? Because it feels that this is made for edgy 13 year olds on the internet. But since it's a political add... I guess this is made for adults. As an adult, I take offense because it's so dumb that believing that this is aimed for my age group seems that I'm treated as a child. Not to mention... that the guy I'm supposed to support in the political sphere compares himself with the serial killer from "American psycho" and puts the cherry on top by comparing himself with the main character of the "Wolf of Wallstreet". You know, a slick salesman that sells people absolute garbage with a sly salespitch with the sole aim to rip you off in favor of his own wealth and social standing. Thinking that you can get away with this, says a lot about how smart these people think their voter base really are. But no worries, yes you can be exploited, you can have people outside the ingroup frowning their eyebrows and thinking: "dafuq you guys?". It just doesn't matter, because at the end of the day your actions are not important when you can just pretend and dream of your own greatness while living in this simplistic comic book fantasy where you are fighting the good fight against the evil stereotypes that inabit your fantastical narrative. With leaders, portrayed like supermen that shoot lightning bolts out of their eyes... Like, seriously you guys.

Please edit to fix the then that should be than.

It almost changes the meaning in several places.

:-)

@Kwek00 I agree. I just had strict teachers and the habits formed in school regarding spelling have stuck! Even with a few misspelt words your English is many orders of magnitude better than my French even though I spent six years 'studying' it over fifty years ago!

@ninalanyon Well, I grew up with a minor form of dyslexia in an atmosphere where "good spelling" and "intelligence" were linked. But later in life I figured out this was just a myth. If you look at people I would consider highly intelligent and have issues with spelling and grammar, it becomes more and more clear that a segment of language purists that believe in this relationship between intelligence and how a language is used, are just kidding themselves in favor of their own self perception. It's a romantic lie, imo.

@Kwek00 Oh absolutely. Schools, even the best, don't do a good job of finding out how to nurture the capabilities that children have. One of my best friends left school with very little in the way of qualifications and is now a very successful power industry analyst. Our school was a very good school but nonetheless it didn't do as well by him as it should have.

It is a simple playbook: Fear of "the other" who are different from you. "Us vs Them!"
It's an old story, but resurfaces again and again over the decades.
It never goes away entirely, because many have to feel superior and dump on those below them.

Today, it has become more mainstream, and cruel, because now, cruelty is the point.

The summation of DeSantis’ latest ad is this: it is an anti lgbtq dog whistle that clearly espouses citizens should strive to be nothing like the ‘outsiders.’ It nicely complements the fact that anyone in that category can now be denied service and healthcare ‘just ’cuz.’

The bigotry isn’t only open, it’s on parade. We said this was coming. We’re telling you more is coming. And sooner or later, they’ll come for you, too.

Nearly 25 million views lol pretty crazy video. I wonder if this will sway evangelical conservatives away from trump and to Desantis

I consistently see conservatives on here espousing many of those talking points expressed in the video

@Kwek00 Time for the left to espouse regressive ideas so that these conservatives will start passing progressive legislation to spite them /s
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@Elessar That might work in a southpark episode. ... see post.
