trump sees the only chance to beat Biden is if the economy collapses. So, in responsible fashion, an ex-POTUS is actively trying to cause a bank run

“With what is happening to our economy, and with the proposals being made on the LARGEST AND DUMBEST TAX INCREASE IN THE HISTORY OF THE USA, TIMES FIVE, JOE BIDEN WILL GO DOWN AS THE HERBERT HOOVER OF THE MODRRN [sic] AGE,” Trump exclaimed on Truth Social. “WE WILL HAVE A GREAT DEPRESSION FAR BIGGER AND MORE POWERFUL THAN THAT OF 1929. AS PROOF, THE BANKS ARE ALREADY STARTING TO COLLAPSE!!!”

Although I hate when people act like Trump is just as bad as past Republican presidents, this actually has been the Republican strategy for decades. During the Obama days, they tried to sabotage the economy, and apparently it was like that under Clinton too.

@BohemianBoo Under Clinton, there was actually some consensus. He and Newt Gingrich got together and picked a list of things to get done, and they accomplished it. They just found common ground and ran with it. It was only during Clinton's second term that the republicans started being stupid.
@originnone Then during Obama, they lost their minds and just tried to obstruct everything. The party was leading up to Trump for a while.

@BohemianBoo I think it was all racist honestly. I used to think a lot of it was Obama's fault for not even trying to reach across the aisle, but looking back I think it was all because Obama was black.
@originnone I don't know, maybe for some of them. But this was also after Newt Gingrich normalized the new strategy of just refusing to compromise. I think if Hillary was president. they would have done the same to her.

@BohemianBoo I was actually a pretty big supporter of Gingrich. He was really good during the Clinton years. I'm not sure about what you say regarding Hilary. She had experience but did very little working with republicans aside from the failed health care attempt in the early 1990s.
@originnone This was before my time, so I can't really say for sure. I just saw how Gingrich changed his philosophy in old interviews and stuff. I think by that point, the culture was becoming so toxic, that they would have obstructed no matter who the president was.
