What evidence do you have to support the claim that democracy is not working???

Democracy was always going to be messy. It was always going to be contentious. But better we air our differences in the well of the Senate or in Parliament, than in the streets. No?

@sarabee1995 I support it in all its messiness

@sarabee1995 and of course, the US version of democracy is so distorted even now by the founding legacy of slavery - thats why there's such a maldistribution of power in the Senate, for instance

@firefall You do realize that the current Congress (House & Senate) is the most racially diverse ever, right? Still not where it should be to reflect the population but, again, the most racially diverse ever.

@sarabee1995 There is a massive die-off of animal and plant species in progress. Climate change is becoming more and more undeniable and horrible. The gap between the obscenely rich and everyone else keeps growing; meanwhile millions of people are starving and right here in the reasonably well-off city I live in, people are sleeping on the streets or in bus shelters and sometimes dying from the winter cold, or of overdoses.

Democracy allows a majority of voters to take the people in charge out of office every few years. That's a lot better than the existing alternatives, but it leads to short-term thinking on the part of politicians and a general tendency toward moderation. These worsening issues of poverty, injustice, and environmental catastrophe call out for radical changes not only in the short term but for the long term, and democracy seems unequipped to make that happen.

Again, I do think democracy is better than the existing alternatives; hence this post. But it sure is not working well for the world we are in.

@sarabee1995 Democracy has always failed... PERIOD!! That's why we have a Representative Republic.. I know the Social Justice Warriors and Open Society Cultist Children,,, all the misguided brain-washed products of George Soros, BTW,,,,,, believe we have a democracy,,, but we positively DO NOT.. Higher Education must really be in the dumper, these days.

@GERRI Oh please. The OP wasn't suggesting that we have a one-man/one-vote pure democracy with referendums deciding every issue.

In common usage, the word democracy today refers to all constitutional monarchies, representative republics, parliamentary systems, etc, etc.

Western democracies from the US to Canada to the UK to France to Germany to Poland and many more are all generally referred to as democracies despite none being literal democracies. What we are instead are systems of government where the people have input at the ballot box.

I get what you are saying. But don't be ridiculous.
