Curious about Nixon

This was a tad before my time, but when Nixon resigned, the vast majority of the USA agreed with that decision and felt that Nixon had done something seriously wrong. Am I correct? Were there many folks in subsequent years who felt Nixon had been wronged? But we all knew Nixon was involved in the break-in.

I remember when Clinton was impeached my dad telling me he thought Clinton should resign. In my mind being untruthful about an extramarital affair is much different than orchestrating a political break-in. As I remember afterwards, most Democrats and some Republicans felt the affair was minor. The republicans who thought this was a major offense had issues with Clinton before that. But we all knew that Clinton had an affair and it looked bad upon him and the office of the president.

But I don't understand Trump. It's like his supporters are in complete denial. Sure there are some who think Trump is a scoundrel and still support him, but it seems like most completely deny that he did anything wrong. I simply don't see how anyone in a right mind would think Trump did nothing wrong or did nothing that made him look bad or disgraced the office of the presidency. With Nixon and Clinton, I think most of the country agreed they did something wrong. The difference was that whether one felt the action justified removal from office. Frankly, I am shocked that 75-80% of the USA can't agree that Trump is a slimy, crooked man. I wouldn't have so much of an issue if his supporters admitted to that and still supported him in spite of that. But they don't. Instead they live in a completely different reality. And it's not just 20% of the country - it's probably 35-40%. If we can't agree on basic reality, we are doomed.

The US had partisan divisions in the 1970s, though they were not as severe as they are now. The majority of Republicans supported Nixon right up to a few days before his resignation, when it became clear that he had lied to the American people about his personal involvement in the Watergate coverup. At that point, Nixon lost quite a bit of support, including in Congress, and resignation was the only option short of impeachment. But even following his resignation in disgrace, there was still a sizable minority that supported him, and continued to support him.

Clinton absolutely was wrong, but his crime didn't rise to the level needed to remove him from office.

It is ironic that Nixon was forced to resign for lying, while Trump lied over 30,000 times in office and his Cult and colleagues continued to support him. Trump should have been removed from office during both impeachments, and he should be disqualified from seeking any office in the future.

@Reason10 No. THAT is a lie.

Go see the Toronto Star database of politicians' lies. Trump CONTINUALLY lied.

Here's an easy one: He said he'd turn over his taxes. Never did it.

How about another: He was going to come up with "the best health plan" for a long time ("real soon now")... Never did it.

Here's a detailed one: Going to get rid of the carried interest deduction. Never did it.

How about downplaying the danger of CoViD? He admitted this in an on-the-record, recorded conversation w/a Watergate reporter.

How about his made up CoViD "treatments"? Those were fabricated nonsense.

How about how he told a reporter near the beginning of his run, that he claimed the traditional news lied so that people would start to distrust the news...showing that he KNEW it was a lie?

@SomeMichGuy There are at least 30,573 documented lies Trump told in public during his failed presidency, plus innumerable others he told in private. As his White House Counsel said when he begged Mueller not to depose Trump, "Trump is incapable of telling the truth" and would perjure himself within moments of any deposition.
@Reason10
@windinhishair Exactly. He's a great guy to get on the stand if you are against him.

@SomeMichGuy A left wing newspaper's OPINION of LAST LEGALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT Trump does not rise to the level of fact.
@Reason10 Clearly, you have not seen the admirable level of detail used for a DB which has tracked both conservatives and liberals.

And you are lying, just like Trump, who lost BOTH popular votes.

As have most Republican Presidential candidates for years.

@Reason10

1) The DB has statements in context. You have nothing.

2) The level of detail is admirable. Your knee-jerk is typical but just sad.

3) Trump lost via LEGAL votes, and you have ZERO proof of your position.

4) Of course the Electoral College ultimately elects the President. You need to read up on how the vote works, because it's well known that there is a popular vote as well as the electoral vote.

Trump lost BOTH popular votes.

Yes, you cannot be fixed and

@SomeMichGuy I'm waiting for some facts. So far, you and your bullshit fake news sources have provided ZERO.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Reason10
Fact 1: Trump lost the popular vote in the 2020 election by about 7.2 million legal votes.
Fact 2: Trump lost the Electoral College vote in the 2020 election by a sizeable margin.
Fact 3: Trump and his allies filed 62 lawsuits alleging fraud in the 2020 election. All but one were either thrown out of court based on the lack of facts and merit, or decided against him. One is Pennsylvania was decided in his favor limiting the counting of legal votes received after election day.

Trump lost any way you look at it, and continues to lose.
@Reason10 Proof you refuse to review doesn't mean it's not proof.

It means you were never serious.

@SomeMichGuy I read everything you spewed. I just know that none of it is credible.
Liberals are morons. They don't know anything. They are idiots.
@Reason10 When shown where to look and given good sources, you clearly haven't read them.

Your accusation describes you & your ilk rather well.
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@SomeMichGuy You goose steppers have not provided good sources.

I have.

That's the difference.
@Reason10 I provided sources. You never did. You just assert lies.

And DJT is the new Fascist leader here...
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@SomeMichGuy I have provided plenty of sources, and they are reliable whether or not you have enough education to read them.

@Reason10 Maybe your post with the sources got deleted? I don't see it now.
