What is wrong with Sam Harris?

He recently appeared on the British podcast "TRIGGERnometry" and made the following comment:

Hunter Biden literally could have had the corpses of children in his basement, I would not have cared

To a sane person, this is an outrageous statement to make. I'm a fan of TRIGGERnometry and have listened to the whole podcast with Harris so I'm aware that he was elaborating on his perspective of Trump when he made this comment, but it's still a really unhinged thing to say and he was being absolutely serious when he said it. I have no idea why anyone would follow this guy or consider him credible in any way because there is something demonstrably wrong with him. He is clearly a troll and will do and say anything to get attention (he always has), but I actually think he is mentally ill as well.

He spent years criticizing Christians, which endeared him to the Left...then when that got boring to people and the novelty wore off he started criticizing Islam, and to an obsessive degree. Although this brought him attention, it also isolated him from many liberals. Now, he's decided to go after Trump and say the most absurd things about him because he wants to regain recognition from the Left and ingratiate himself with them again.

He really is pathetic.

That was a really stupid comment, but it isn't that much different from comments made by Trump who followed a similar path. Trump was a registered Democrat in NYC until he realized he could grift Republicans more easily, and turned into what he is today. I doubt he really has any political beliefs at all. He will say or do anything that will benefit himself in the here and now, just like Harris.

@Jenna76 They are so far down the rabbit hole they think they are in Gyna, and Trump is Emperor.
@windinhishair From what I understand about American politics it is essential if you are running a large business you need to be making donations to both sides so that you get preferential treatment regardless of who wins an election. Seems to be standard business expense.

@CheekyBadger There are many people who do exactly that. Even Donald Trump was a Democrat and donated to Democratic candidates, including the Clintons, when he believed it would benefit his business.
He spent years criticizing Christians, which endeared him to the Left...then when that got boring to people and the novelty wore off he started criticizing Islam, and to an obsessive degree. Although this brought him attention, it also isolated him from many liberals

This is a big misconception. Leftists were fine with him criticizing Christianity and Islam. What we didn't like was him being a religion reductionist when it came it Islam. He would say things like, Palestine is the way it is because of Islam, while ignoring the role that Israel plays. He'd also say only Muslim communities are still living in the Middle Ages, even though there are also Christian countries where they still stone gays and "witches" to death. And within America, we have plenty of Evangelicals that are still living in the Middle Ages.

And Liberals generally don't like Anti-Theism because Liberals are stupid.

I have heard him say similar things before in comparing Trump to Biden and his point seems to be that Biden represents a sane leader rooted in reality, so even if he was perverted and devious enough to have murdered children, that is still a safer choice than giving the nuclear codes to someone like Trump who appears to live in delusion, potentially leading to millions of dead children. It's an extreme example but I don't think it's incomprehensible

@plungesponge This may be the most stupid thing I've ever read.

Tbh though I've listened to them a lot in the past, I find the self proclaimed intellectuals to lose their perspective as they gain a following due to the positive feedback loop around them at all times. They also tend to waffle and intellectualise so much they devoid themselves from the reality of what they're talking about and end up with bad takes that people take as granted because "smart person/smart sounding person said it".

They forget every human is fallable in their knowledge and they're often tripped up by opinion and bias which they all fall into eventually. Look at Jordon Peterson for example.

@Ryannnnnn I understand your point but I disagree about Peterson. In my view, he has been on a journey of self-discovery. Sam Harris is compete trash compared to him...absolutely no similarities between them, and Peterson is superior in every way.

Note: I'm aware that Peterson has developed a reputation for trying to appeal to the right, but this is bullshit. I watch his YouTube channel multiple times a week and many of the subjects he talks about aren't widely discussed or political in any way. He has addressed some significant issues in relation to the progressive left, but that is only because they require a response...and an effective one at that. What we are being confronted with now is insanity and his response to that is very justified.

Harris, on the other hand, has always been an attention seeking troll void of any real intellect.

@SW-User See the issue is that when we speak about certain things they are political. People will talk about them, identity and the like are and have always been inherently political. Regardless though, since I've seperated myself from the politics I see it as what it is and it seems ever more removed from reality the more I listen and the older I get.

People tend to fall for the narratives but the reality is much milder. I think getting wrapped up in the left right dynamic just confuses everybody and warps them into the shape of the spiral of opinionated narratives. You can't be objective at that point and that's why I'll listen to the occasional podcast but I don't invest my time into these people anymore. They're just as fallable and opinionated as any other person no matter how learned or verbose they might be.
i think he believes everything he says so i like him

I love that you're doing something the left does all the time.

@CountScrofula What's that?

lol

@SW-User So what the left does is they see someone who has like, an entire career's worth of material. Thousands of words and takes and personal explorations.

Then they say one thing and they'll go A HAH MASK OFF MOMENT CANCELLED.

This dude isn't a secret monster, he's a very well known political voice and there's no secret bs going on. He was making a point about how Hunter Biden isn't a real political figure and anyone who fixates on him is an idiot. Not that he has no value for human life.

And you know that. But you're deliberately exaggerating this to make a point about a liberal commentator to make him out to be a monster.

Exactly like the left would do if someone said one stupid thing six years ago on twitter.
SW-User
@CountScrofula Oh, I actually don't know that. As I said in the original post, he was being very serious when he said that he wouldn't have cared if the corpses of dead children were found in Hunter Biden's basement because "Trump bad man".

Also, I made it clear that I think Harris has espoused a lot of trash on other things as well. I am not calling him a troll or questioning his character (and state of mind) just because of one comment, as insane as that comment is.
