And there's a water shortage?

No! There's a water delivery problem.

Yes…even ridiculous is that Cali has wildfires and it’s literally next to the ocean 🙁

@Vivaci And how are you going to get that salt water to the fires? You are going to set up a pumping and distribution system of fire hydrants based on ocean water ? Not such a simple thing to do ... the fire hydrants are ALL currently run on existing potable water distribution systems and worse few to none of these systems are run into the areas where the wildfires are happening.. by definition wilderness areas... You need to understand infrastructure to understand why what you are saying is not practical... but it could be made to be practical..because for instance using fresh water systems to flush toilets and urinals is VERY wasteful - a second distribution system of ocean based water for these purposes is tenable as would be salt water cooling for air conditioners - a much MUCH more energy efficient way than using air cooled condensing units... There is a case to be made for doing it.. its just that it would involve a LOT of money to install such infrastructure where it is needed...
@pdqsailor1 I know it’s going to cost us a lot of money, but it’ll be money well spent. Coz not only will it save the forests, but also save a near drought-prone area, by inducing rainfall that is directly related to trees, and lifecycle of an ecosystem.

We could also consider other expensive options like cloud seeding to generate artificial rainstorms, etc. which could be short term and more practical.

@Vivaci I spend my summers using our sailboat located on an island in Toronto harbour ... we are surrounded by fresh water and our club won't set up a distribution network to use this water for flushing toilets or urinals.. we don't even use it to water the grass or to cool our AC units or with a heat pump to heat our pool or our club house in Winter.. all completely ridiculous and very VERY wasteful.. I have a water sourced heat pump on our boat.. it is incredibly efficient both for AC and for heating.. but to get a group of people to build infrastructure is such an uphill climb... I don't involve myself in trying to get them to do the right thing... because it is a thankless task...
@pdqsailor1 It’s exactly that….pointless arguing about something that seems so logical, yet near impossible to comprehend. Desalination is easy if we depend on Sunlight for that…and capture the condensed water. Isn’t that how sea salt is formed?

Sea salt can be recovered by evaporation- that is one way. It’s not very efficient as it takes vast time and space . Reverse osmosis is fast but it needs a energy intensive. @Vivaci
@pdqsailor1 RO is expensive man 😆

@Vivaci yes both in capital and operating expenditures but scaled up it is pretty effective..
