Majority of GOP House Members Kowtow to Communist China on the Computer Chip Bill

A mere 24 House Republicans broke with the GOP leadership to support the chips and science bill.

---

Two dozen House Republicans helped pass a $280 billion bill on Thursday to bolster the domestic chip manufacturing industry and subsidize scientific research, bucking GOP leadership’s recommendation to vote against the measure.

The House passed the CHIPS and Science Act in a 243-187-1 vote, with 24 Republicans joining most Democrats in supporting the measure. One Democrat, Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-Calif.) voted present.

The measure, cleared by the Senate in a bipartisan 64-33 vote on Wednesday, is meant to bolster the United States’s competitiveness with China through a keen focus on the domestic chip manufacturing industry.

The bill provides $54 billion for chips and public wireless supply chain innovation, including $39 billion to build, expand and modernize domestic semiconductor facilities. Additionally, the measure allocates $11 billion for research and development headed by the Department of Commerce.

Odd that the party of self-sufficiency, capitalist business, security, etc., would want to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a Communist authoritarian...oh, right. Sorry. I keep dreaming that we finally pulled our collective head out of our collective ass. How silly of me.
Gosh, you would think that even if the economic competitiveness benefits of the Chips bill didn't convince the GOP, then the military benefits would!!

Much of our modern military equipment runs on cutting edge radiation hardened micro-chips. The Chips bill helps keep cutting edge chip manufacture (such as extreme ultra-violet (EUV) lithography) here in the US. Did republicans really want to make our military dependent on manufacturing in Taiwan & Korea?? Please!!

BTW, there are only three companies in the world making cutting edge chips in volume. Those are Samsung (Korea), TSMC (Taiwan) and Intel (USA). US companies that sell a lot of cutting edge chips, such as Apple, AMD, Nvidia, & Qualcomm, contract with TSMC to have their chips manufactured. That makes these companies dependent on a 6000 mile supply chain. Not acceptable for strategic military equipment!
@ElwoodBlues Exactly.

Some items really ARE essential to national security; even if there were ZERO dependence on foreign chips for the military, utility grids/equipment, etc., even to secure our ability to produce *consumer* goods, it would be worth it.

And why would allowing foreign companies to produce our military's chips be a smart thing? Sheesh!

It sounds like the Republicans don't want to spend any money, collect any taxes, or prepare for the future. Energy self sufficiency, climate change transportation, water...all of that stuff is just supposed to be handled by Elon Musk in their world I guess.

At last some intelligent responsable Republicans
It seems to be rather common that they are outed...you know, traitors h fools on the Right.

You seem conflicted whether you are happy or pissed over republican support of the bill.
Are you SO locked into hatred, you've forgotten how to be pleased, happy, cooperative?

@Budwick

I'm PLEASED that 24 GOP House members are willing to stand up to the Trumpets and vote for what is in AMERICA's best interest. Ticked that there aren't more.
