Sentiments on Abe Shinzo from the US

If you were interested:

Obama:
“I am shocked and saddened by the assassination of my friend and longtime partner Shinzo Abe in Japan. Former Prime Minister Abe was devoted to both the country he served and the extraordinary alliance between the United States and Japan.”

“I will always remember the work we did to strengthen our alliance, the moving experience of traveling to Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor together, and the grace he and his wife Akie Abe showed to me and Michelle. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the people of Japan who are very much in our thoughts at this painful moment.”

Biden:
“The longest serving Japanese Prime Minister, his vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific will endure. Above all, he cared deeply about the Japanese people and dedicated his life to their service. Even at the moment he was attacked, he was engaged in the work of democracy. The United States stands with Japan in this moment of grief. I send my deepest condolences to his family.”

Trump:
“Really BAD NEWS FOR THE WORLD!”

“His killer was captured and will hopefully be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Few people know what a great man and leader Shinzo Abe was, but history will teach them and be kind. He was a unifier like no other, but above all, he was a man who loved and cherished his magnificent country, Japan. Shinzo Abe will be greatly missed. There will never be another like him!”
I don't really feel bad for a right wing extremist who is only not a fascist because Imperial Japan was not technically fascist.

The guy (and his party) and the ruling members of the Japanese government are extremists right wingers. Sexist, homophobic, and sympathizers with the Japanese Empire of the 30s. They believe Japan liberated Asia and that the Tokyo Tribunal was a crime against the Japanese people.

But I guess anyone who hates China gets an automatic pass just like cold war nazis did in decades past.

It is socially inappropriate to speak ill of the dead.
"De mortuis nil nisi bene dicendum", as the old Roman saying goes.
@helenS no, a war promoter, a pro nuclear person who managed to get Japan to do things that they oppose, We can talk about justice today.

@Roundandroundwego We are a war-promoting nation, not at rest with the military since our inception 250 years ago. We are pro-nuclear; we only want to make sure we're the ones with all the toys. Our government has passed sweeping edicts in direct opposition of the will of the people which, for a democratic nation, is the most egregious sin possible.

As for Abe, he is being mourned the world over, including Japan, according to all reports.
@Graylight Japan isn't a warrior country.
That's good. Applauding death would be a bad look, especially when the guy is no longer in office.

Has everyone forgotten Pearl Harbor
Graylight · 51-55, F
@MarineBob No, Bob. It's that everyone doesn't live 70 years ago.

Antarctica was once a swamp, but I wouldn't bring my bathing suit now.

@MarineBob I've been in Japan many times (business-related), and they are the most peaceful, harmony-driven people I've ever met. Almost scary.
War prime minister shot dead. Ironic or justice?
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Roundandroundwego I don't know. Is it justice when the car I always drove drives me into a wall?
Trump’s focus always: "punish the bad hombre !"

Important, but not what this was about.

@bijouxbroussard Indeed. Nor Abe's policies, nor politics in that part of the world.

We lost another person struggling to make a difference to violence. That should be mourned, even if momentarily. Tragedy doesn't stop at something Abe said 12 or 14 years ago. There are family, friends, colleagues, believers in his message. A minutes reflection wouldn't hurt anyone.
