I’m a Brit (yeah, I know my profile says Spain – that’s simply because it’s where I live now) and everytime I say something that criticizes America, I get two responses from the less informed Americans.
1. We kicked your ass because we didn’t want to live under the tyranny of your king.
Well done, you removed the tyranny of a single monarch and proceeded to replace him with nine monarchs sitting on the SCOTUS bench for life. How’s that working out for you now?
2. If it wasn’t for us, you’d all be speaking German and living under fascism.
Well done, you helped us to beat Nazi Germany only to create your own version of fascism now.
I'm as certain as I can be that, when Margaret Atwood published this amazing book in 1985, she had no intention for it to become the GOP manifesto in 2022.

Believe me, many of us well know that repealing Roe has made women’s rights a joke in this country. That the theists were able to do this to the women of our country has made our traditional separation of church and state a travesty. Our Southern states might’ve well be ruled by the Taliban, their leaders clearly have the same lack of regard for this country’s girls and women.
@Elessar You’re right. The fact that in many of those states they’re trying to control what their residents do outside of the states would indicate "states’ rights" is not going to apply here for long.
@bijouxbroussard Yesterday, I was blocked by someone because I argued with a friend of hers who stated that the repealing of Roe was Biden's fault. She and another friend of hers didn't take too kindly to me saying that they were promoting a GOP narrative.
My advice (for what it's worth) to all Americans is to stop dumping on Biden and the Democrats. It's time for Democrats and Independents to band together and, as a united force, fight the GOP rot TOGETHER!
@WalksWith Look I dont see the problem here. Simply hold a state by state vote (states rights) to choose whether your state continues to send money to the Feds for the express purpose of distribution to other states. Then each state that wants to support Arkansas and Oklahoma et al, fine.😷
@LeopoldBloom But would they?? I mean look at all the "unconstitutional" laws that get passed by the states that seem to take yeasr to even get to the Supreme court for a decision. Sure, it may prove unconstitutional. But with all the appeals and delays built into the system the donor states could effectively keep the money and spend it for years.. Delay, delay, delay. I seem to have heard that being used before..😷
@whowasthatmaskedman Here's how it would play out. A Republican administration cuts Medicaid payments to states with legal abortion or one that allows trans care. California responds by halting the forwarding of federal tax payments. It would basically be civil war depending on how the federal government responds. If it's Trump, he'd use it as an excuse to complain and ask for more donations from his cult. DeSantis would screw up his response the way he screwed up his response to Disney.
@LeopoldBloom I cant argue with any of that. Now I cant speak for Americans generally. Although those I have met personally seem rational. But what would happen next is that some people, mostly the professional classes, will move to another state, effecting the tax base and availability of some services, and then an election would come and the people left would be unhappy enough with the lack of services funding and money to vote out the olg guard, making way for someone else who was more reasonable..😷
@whowasthatmaskedman That's already happening. Obstetricians are leaving states where abortion is illegal, further exacerbating the shortage of doctors in many places. Enrollment at colleges in those states is also dropping as students don't want to be unable to get an abortion in case they need one.
@LeopoldBloom The politicians can make all the laws they want. The people will decide...In the end, whole businesses will shift interstate to access better labor pools and leave behind their dead wood. But the people with get up and go will get up and go.. The rest can have Gilead if they want it..😷
@whowasthatmaskedman Here in Georgia, the state is shifting from all the influx into the Atlanta area, including many Black people from other parts of the country in a reverse "Great Migration."
In The Devil You Know, Charles Blow recommends that Black people from other parts of the U.S. move back to the southern states and basically take them over and form a regional voting bloc.
@whowasthatmaskedman The Supreme Court just ruled that Alabama has to create a second Black-majority district.
Charles Blow's argument is that if enough Black people move back to the South, they will be able to form a regional voting bloc that could influence Congress and the Electoral College.
@LeopoldBloom Yes. And the Alabama people have sent back two plans, neither of which conform to the Supreme courts order.. And the default is that the Court itself will set the new map. Pretty stupid on the surface. But it does mean the Local people can wash their hands of the result and blame the Feds for Alabama going a little bluer.😷
@whowasthatmaskedman That's why they're doing it. They know they're going to be shot down on appeal. But this way, they can say they fought the good fight.
