It's Not a "Domestic Situation." It's MURDER!

CNN - Two college students were shot to death Thursday evening in a church parking lot in Ames, Iowa, police said, before the shooter fatally turned his gun on himself.

The shooting at the Cornerstone Church was the result of a "domestic situation" between the shooter, a 33-year-old man from the city of Boone, and one of the women, said Story County Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald at a news conference Friday.

Both women, ages 22 and 21, were students at nearby Iowa State University, he said.

The shooter had been arrested May 31 on charges of third-degree harassment and impersonating a public official, all related to his recent breakup with one of the victims, Fitgerald said. He posted bond, Fitzgerald said, and was scheduled to be back in court June 10.

At the shooter's home, authorities found an AR-15 rifle with ammunition that "played no part in this event whatsoever," Fitzgerald said. In the shooter's vehicle, they found more 9mm ammunition he bought an hour before the shooting.

He probably should have been IN JAIL, not posting bond.

And since he had been arrested on charges of third-degree harassment and impersonating a public official, he should have been required to surrender any firearms pending the disposition of his case.

He also should have been put on a DO NOT SELL list, prohibiting gun shops from selling him ammunition. And if that had been in force that should have been a justification for REVOKING his bail.

It would be a step in the right direction at least. Nobody who demonstrates mental illness or violence should be allowed to possess guns period.

@UreBesFrend Nobody who demonstrates mental illness or violence and an inclination to shoot people is concerned with rules or laws. They would get guns one way, legally, or another, illegally.
@RedBaron Maybe, but it shouldn't be as easy as going to Walmart and picking one up.

@UreBesFrend No matter what is done, it will be no more difficult than anything in demand but illegal, like weed prior to legalization. If someone wants something and has money, someone else will always be there to sell it to them. The scary reality is that there's nothing that can be effectively done.
@RedBaron But doing nothing is not the answer either. Keep doing small things until it is safely handled.. baby steps. It is the only way to keep the gun lovers out of the decisions.

@UreBesFrend True enough, but I am not convinced that there is anything that can be done to move the needle.
