@wildbill83 and doesn’t “well regulated” mean anything? I think youre making my point actually. At the time there was a standing military as needed with state militias composed of citizens furnishing their own weapons.
@DailyFlash "well regulated" doesn't mean state/federally governed, it simply means for the common defense of the people/Constitution/country against possible aggressors (whether foreign or domestic), rather than selfish reasons.
Many democrats argue that we don't "need" certain weapons for hunting... Of course not, but that's not their purpose; We need them to defend against potential enemies. They are a deterrent against tyrants, not deer...
And the fact remains, despite any military's technology technology, armed citizens still constitute a force far larger in numbers than any regular army, and are more disciplined & trained in the use of firearms (2-3 weeks of marksmanship training in military basic training does even compared to the years of experience and familiarity of an armed citizen). As most have seen/witnessed in the middle east, and now Ukraine; even the most advanced military has a difficult time subduing an armed populace defending in a familiar environment.
as the Japanese were acutely aware of in WW2, a successful invasion of the mainland US was inconceivable; aside from the casualties they'd have suffered trying to land any sizeable force, even if they managed to secure a beachhead, defending it against a perpetual resistance would've been impossible.
