I spent three wonderful years as a grad student in Texas in the 1980s and loved the state. For years afterward, I promoted the place. But over the last decade I became increasingly horrified at the seemingly ultra-right-wing takeover. Still, I thought maybe it was just the media painting a biased portrait. Well, I recently spent a month in Texas, and it is not at all the same place I knew and loved. Not by a long shot (no pun intended). It is now a scary place. I now know the media portrayal is accurate. All too accurate. And it breaks my heart.

@JonathanC That is exactly why I'm leaving when I retire. The crazies and Christotaleban are thoroughly in charge.

Conservatives used to run on "good governance.". Now they're about privileges to buddies. They can't even keep the lights on when it is too cold or too hot. This place is uninhabitable without air conditioning.

@JonathanC What's interesting is how much more conservative the place is now that it's trending purple.
