Should the ownership of guns be banned or restricted?

The first mass murder that I remember was on Aug. 1, 1966, at the University of Texas campus clock tower. Enrolled student Charles J. Whitman took control of the observation deck and fired several weapons down onto the campus and the surrounding Austin business district. Fourteen people died and over thirty others were wounded. Not much has been done since then to restrict or ban guns. I don't expect to see very much now or in the near future and I am concerned about the next generation of military type weapons made available to the public.

@softspokenman And yet, mass murders had happened as much as 200 years earlier, first recorded in 1764.

What the Whitman incident did was highlight the need for tactical units for crisis response. But Whitman left a note asking that his brain be studied after his death to find out what changed him. He was found to have had a brain tumor pressing on his amygdala, a region of the brain crucial for emotion and behavioral control.

This led to scientific study that's revealed some interesting facts. But we don't treat mental health with the scientific and methodical approach it requires out in the public. We instead use it as a term to kick around; just another of the red herrings thrown out by gun lobbyists and the men they've bought.
