Sad that there was no real leftist option, which increasingly seems to be the norm in many countries.
@SW-User Well, how about offering a credible platform? Waving red flags and talking of beheading the king just isn't enough.

@SW-User In the French system, there is a run-off between the two leading candidates after the first round of voting. Jean-Luc Melenchon ( a leftist) narrowly missed out on the run-off because he finished about 1% behind Le Pen in the first round.

Pffffff
@Burnley123 Were you at the roundabouts with the yellow vests? Did you really listen to Melenchon's speeches?
Burnley12341-45, M
@EarthlingWise Of course not. I did look through the stuff you sent me and I was able to translate a few articles. I saw no support for Putin.

I've also read other articles attacking him that claim (in the headline) that he supports Putin when his quotes say something different.

Also, given that he is leftist, this would seem strange anyway. Putin is a right-wing autocrat and Melecnhon is a socialist. Being critical of NATO does not make you pro-Putin. Not all populists are the same. In fact, they fall into two distinct camps which don't like each other.
@Burnley123 wishful thinking. Putin is making friends with right-wing leaders (Fran莽ois Fillon, Le Pen), but the sad story is the socialists have been infiltrated by pseudo libertarian groups, whether in France or the USA. Melenchon is no longer a socialist. He is surrounded by indig茅nistes, people that defend 'communities' instead of universalist values. This has been a big chasm in the left world.
Melenchon has always romanticized the South -American revolution , he is anti-USA, and anybody who is opposed to the USA is supposed to be trustworthy. But no, sorry, it isn't so simple.
Burnley12341-45, M
@EarthlingWise I'm somewhat familiar with the American left and I'm definitely not buying that at all.

You are a committed centrist who doesn't like Melenchon. That is fine but I don't agree and I don't find any of your criticisms accurate or substantive. I wish you the best but I must sleep. Goodnight.
@Burnley123 I'm not a committed centrist. Obvioulsy I don't like M.Melenchon because he means nothing good for my country. I will only comment here because I do care about my country.
Burnley12341-45, M
@EarthlingWise I appreciate you are acting in good faith but you haven't convinced me. We will have to agree to disagree.
@Burnley123 I know one thing, you never convince people , they have to see for themselves.
Burnley12341-45, M
@EarthlingWise And sometimes people just have a different view.
@Burnley123 Btw this was not an allusion to your earlier post, which I had not seen, but to the words and scenic representations staged by the yellow vests. Very violent calls to murder. I don't think you are aware of the violence expressed by such groups.
Burnley12341-45, M
@EarthlingWise I don't see how Melenchon can be blamed for things done by a minority of his supporters. Or people who claim to be his supporters. If he personally, has advocated violence, then that is worthy of criticism.

I can only imagine your reaction if Melenchon's bodyguard did something like this:

Not to mention the violence of the French police that took place under Macron's watch.

I am not French but I do know politics. I know how the media work to smear the left and that unfortunately, some well-intentioned people can end up being taken in by that. I've been directly part of a movement that has been smeared because it represented interests against those of the political establishment in my own country. What I see here, is the same pattern repeating.

If I am crazy and missing an obvious point, then so are 20% of your compatriots, some of whom are interviewed in the video.

Here is some alternative analysis. Macron is not Le Pen and I'm glad he has won but Macron has also enabled the RN by accepting some of their worst narratives. Also; his attacks of French pensions, the carbon tax and other cuts he has played into the (not unreasonable narrative) that he is a president for the rich. The RN - hate them though I do - have latched onto this and exploited it. In doing so, they have attracted the support of angry older former PS supporters.

The left is socially liberal and also opposes both Le Pen and the neoliberal reforms of Macron. Of course, powerful interests are not going to like this and will do anything within their power to discredit any leaders doing this. Some of their criticisms may be true but I haven't seen anything you have posted which is backed up by sound evidence. I don't trust the opinions of journalists alone.

You seem nice and this is not personal. I sincerely believe everything I say here though.
@Burnley123 I just wanted to put that straight. I won't engage in political talks any more though.
Burnley12341-45, M
@EarthlingWise Friends can disagree. I wish you nothing but the best.
