The Russian Navy’s Black Sea flagship has suffered major damage and the crew has abandoned the ship, state media said late Tuesday in reports following Ukrainian claims of hitting the ship with a missile strike.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the mishap on RTS Moskva (121), a ship in the country’s Black Sea Fleet, according to state-run outlet TASS.

A fire broke out on the ship, causing ammunition to detonate, according to TASS. State media did not elaborate on the cause of the fire.

Ukrainian officials claimed that shore-based anti-ship guided missiles hit Moskva which had been operating from the Black Sea Fleet’s headquarters in Sevastopol, Crimea.
Forbes is reporting Moskva later sank, but there's no confirmation of that at this time.

"A fire broke out on the ship”

The russians appear to have forgotten to mention the Neptune missiles that started the fire 😂

@beckyromero If you want to go back to WW2, do we need to discuss how it started in the Pacific. With a carrier strike force a long way from home. And both sides used carriers to project that aggressive power to where it was needed. The other power in that war that had aircraft carriers was Britain. And while they were effective (helping to sink the Bismark for instance) they were prime targets even then.
But weapons of war have progressed. Guided Missiles, mid air refuelling drones and so much more. I stand by my original statements. That modern carriers are a way to project force , usually on a lesser opponent, well away from your home soil. In a fair fight of equals they are a juicy fat target and too expensive to lose.

@whowasthatmaskedman Assymetrical warefare was more fun.

At this point ‘to boldly go’ reliably brings in a plethora of Star Trek fans 😂

I hope the American Navy is watching this carefully. The locals with a few missles can make mincemeat of a Cruiser.. Or a supercarrier.. Thats modern guided weaponry and drone warefare.😷

@ChipmunkErnie

That incident happened because some Australian MEN thought that Australian WOMEN belonged exclusively to them.

But it's not just Australian MEN who have that "possession" gene. American men do as well.

The above is a dramatization of a real-life event.

In reality, it was American miners in Montana, not lumberjacks, who resented Canadian military personnel going out with local American women. The Canadian soldiers had gone to The Gold Bar and just as was portrayed in the movie, "The Devi's Brigade," American civilian men resented it and a fight resulted, with the American men of the unit defending the Canadians and pummeling the miners and throwing them out of the bar.

@ChipmunkErnie Another supressed incident was Australian officers having to shout orders to their men to restrain them from tearing Gen Douglas Macarthur apart when he insulted them for stopping the Japanese advance across the spine of New Guinea and holding them. Undertrained, under resourced and unsupported (except by native porters) Thereby denying MacArthur the honour of turning them back. Macarthurs retreat from that parade also went unreported.😷

Apparently a USN P-8A Poseidon out of Germany provided coordinates of the Moskva to the Ukrainian missile battery that hit it, the P-8A's have been patrolling the Black Sea since the start of the invasion by Russia.
beckyromero · 36-40, F
@spjennifer

A Daily Mail article says the P-8 Poseidon was operating out of Romania (makes more sense than Germany), and quotes "The Times." Which "Times"? The New York Times? The London Times? The Moscow Times? The article doesn't say.

Guess we'll have to wait for some clarification.

But we SHOULD be monitoring all Russian naval movenment when they are conducting an invasion against a country bordering NATO.

And if that little bit of info fell into the hands of Ukraine, so be it.

When the British lost track of the German battleship Bismarck after the Battle of the Denmark Strait, it was a U.S. Navy pilot (kept secret at the time) flying a RAF Catalina that located her and the coordinates were quickly given to Admiral James Somerville commanding Force H with the aircraft carrier Ark Royal. A torpedo strike from Ark Royal damaged Bismarck's port rudder and allowed the battleships King George V and Rodney to catch up and sink her.

@beckyromero I simply meant that it's home base was in Germany, quite possible it was operating at a forward operating base in Romania.
@beckyromero If the Daily Mail says "The Times", they mean The Times of London.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@beckyromero And??? Yes, MEN (OMG!!!) fought. But from what I've read and seen in documentaries it had not much to do with "ownership of women" as to the fact the Aussie soldiers had no money and the American soldiers did, and so the Americans were pretty much buying the Aussie women. All of which has nothing to do with the fact they rioted and so for whatever reasons, the Americans were not greeted with open arms. Same thing happened in Britain, I believe, with the Americans being pretty well off compared to the British soldiers.
beckyromero · 36-40, F
@ChipmunkErnie

🙄

You're the one complaining the "Assie soldiers had no money."
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@beckyromero No, I'm no complaining, just relating history. Try reading instead of opinionating to push your agenda.
beckyromero · 36-40, F
@ChipmunkErnie

And what do you think is "my agenda"?
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I've heard rumors that Putin's claiming everything is fine, the Moskva is now the new flagship of the Russian submarine fleet.
walabby · 61-69, M
Those Ukrainian marines told that ship to go fuck itself, so it did? XD
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@beckyromero Oddly enough the British use of Aircraft carrier was mostly as Torpedo Bombers and they werent really equipped to provide Fighter cover against a modern fighter escort. 😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@beckyromero I cant dispute any of that. But things played out as they did. The British conduct of the war in the Pacific on land and sea was really a matter of bouncing from one disaster to the next. Its a matter of conjecture whether Britain kept all this better commanders back in the European theatre. And those wooden carrier decks were a real issue..😷
walabby · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman ...and the early torpedo bombers (Fairy Swordfish) used couldn't catch their carrier if it was sailing into a decent gale... Brave pilots!
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@walabby Indeed. Those crates were deathtraps even before someone started shooting at them..😷
