If they retroactively reimburse me what I paid for my son, sure!

@LeopoldBloom They likely didn’t get screwed over, and just went to school back when it was pretty cheap. I got out with 10k in loans, and paid it off ages ago - I’m not sweating if kids saddled with current level massive loans get some help.

@QuixoticSoul Same here. I paid for room, board, and tuition at UCLA in the early 80s, unloading trucks part-time. Public college should cost the same as public K-12 - zero. Private schools, maybe not. I don't want my tax dollars going to Bob Fucking Jones University.
Here's the problem. If you believe that the only reason to get an education is a higher-paying job, then you would say that it's a personal investment. But if you believe that an educated populace is beneficial in itself, then you would say that society should pay for it.
One argument to use on conservatives is to remind them that business owners don't have to teach their employees to read or do basic math, because they've already learned those skills in the free public schools.

@LeopoldBloom What do you mean? I just finished paying...and now next day all is forgiven for them...
People are pathetic and lazy and expect free stuff...I don't and never did. I think it's a lousy idea.
I also think there should be some transparency on tuitions being charged.

@fun4us2b I definitely would support free public college going forward. I have to admit, I'm somewhat conflicted about discharging loans or reimbursing for past expenses. But saying "fuck them because I didn't get any" would be like a polio victim opposing the vaccine because it can't help them anymore. Just because we did things wrong in the past doesn't mean we should keep doing them the same way so people who were screwed over won't feel left out.

@LeopoldBloom if they chose to go to an expensive private college, why should that be forgiven by public policy, using tax dollars? We agree, I am all in, on improving public colleges. I went to community and state colleges....my fancy educated friends learn from me all the time....and visaversa

@fun4us2b I agree, I have a real problem reimbursing people who attended private colleges or even forgiving their debt. That being said, in some ways, private colleges are communistic in that the wealthy students who pay in cash end up subsidizing the poor students. How often do you hear about some poor kid who gets a full scholarship to Harvard? The school pays for that out of the money they get from the rich kids.
