Tell that to Ford, GM, Chrysler, Apple, Nike and of course Walmart. And be prepared for the prices of everything to double..😷

Not so! Not so at all! There's no reason why those so-called "American" (they are really transnationals) companies in China couldn't set up shop in Central and South America. Improve the standard of living there, help democracy to thrive, would help with our undocumented immigrant problem, strengthen ties.

@beckyromero I completely agree. IF you allow a 2 year lead time for construction and skilling. And if you accept that China was the cheapest quote all things considered, which means you are still looking at price rises.😷

@whowasthatmaskedman

But we're funding the Chinese military and therefore having to spend more (via taxes).

Penny wise and pound foolish.

There's no reason to believe we couldn't outspend the Chinese military to the point it ruins their economy and brings about an enlightened change.

But the key difference between what brought about the end of the Cold War is that we're basically propping up the Chinese economy. We weren't doing that with the Soviets.

@beckyromero Reagan actually did that with the Star Wars project and Russia. But that was a different America then.
I'm sorry. But I dont see how America is propping up the Chinese economy. And while the US and Chinese Military may stack up well for America on paper, once you break down the strategy employed and the tactical situation, America is at a tremendous disadvantage, playinng away again. A long way from home and with public opinion to consider with every move. History is on my side.😷

@beckyromero and reduce emissions from shipping.
@beckyromero China is moving some of their own manufacturing to Africa.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@LeopoldBloom Thats a double blow. First, the cheap labour for basic processes. Second, the easier shipping into the continent itself, which is an emerging market, and as part of the one belt, one road initiative, to influence politics through loans disguised as "development assistance" When the loans default (as they usually do) the Chinese extend them indefinitely, in exchange for trade deals , fishing rights or a favourable vote in the UN.😷
@whowasthatmaskedman It's basically their version of colonization. In the late 19th century, Africa was exploited for raw materials; today it's for cheap labor.

@LeopoldBloom Exactly!!!
