As much as I hate the phrase, have you ever really studied a shark feeding frenzy? There are identifiable stages. First the sharks all group together with a common purpose. Then the excitement level is raised and prey stands some real trouble. Then the attacks get a little uncoordinated, a little haphazard and a little unfocused. Before long sharks are nipping at each other but if you give them enough time, they'll eat each other outright because they no longer can tell the difference between predator and prey; they no longer know what they're eating. They're running purely on instinct and need.

I don't know about you, but it sounds familiar to me.
