Rep. Liz Cheney: White House Denying Americans Being Beaten, Probably Held Hostage in Afghanistan

Cheney also called the agreement brokered between the U.S. and the Taliban under the Trump administration a “surrender agreement,” contending that the deal “undercut” the Afghan government and “emboldened” the insurgent group.

She's right about Trump's agreement. But the Taliban takeover was inevitable. We basically propped up the Afghan government and military as if it was a jobs program. So once the money stopped, there was no reason for anyone to continue with it.

However, I'd be interested in how Cheney knows about Americans being beaten and "probably" held hostage, beyond just assuming they are.

I think that's inevitable. And we did rescue Americans from a hotel using U.S. military helicopters because they were blocked from getting to the airport by Taliban checkpoints.

If you're blocking someone's path from escape, waiting for the U.S. military withdrawal, then those people become bargaining chips for the release of Afghan assets that we seized, i.e. "hostages."
@beckyromero Biden is negotiating behind the scenes with the Taliban to secure safe passage for everyone. This is why none of the planes have been shot down. Whether we're turning over "assets" is questionable. All of the American equipment was already removed. The Taliban are probably happy with the state-of-the-art equipment that we gave the Afghan army that they now control.
