I don't think it was a "crime", in light of a post 9/11 world where we discovered that Afghanistan, with the Taliban in control, were hosting AQ terrorist training camps and financing them and hiding OBL, there was justification for getting rid of those threats quickly. Did we need to invade to accomplish those things? The dastardly duo of Bush and Chaney were spoiling for a fight and they sure thought so. IMHO, we could have just as easily carpet bombed them into oblivion without invading the country, renovated a couple of hundred B52's or Built 100 brand new B2's and 1000 F-35's in the intervening 20 years for half the cost and bombed them back to the stone age. Not advocating we should have done that but it would have been a less costly alternative with better results...
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@spjennifer That is a dangerous precedent. By that logic both the US and Mexico are entitled to invade and bomb each other over the Narcos.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Sounds like you're saying that AQ and OBL should have just been allowed to run rampant and destroy whatever they wanted to? You'll note that I questioned whether we should have invaded them, so no, I wasn't in agreement with us doing that even if I did serve there.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@spjennifer The only mission should have been kill Bin Laden, fuck up Al-Qaeda, and give Afghanistan a few years to get their shit together. No nation building. I would have stayed put, and even if the Taliban took over, just think Guantanamo Bay.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@spjennifer It is a false dichotomy. The US doesn't bomb and invade every country to get a criminal. Or how would it look if the RAF carpet bombed Ireland over the IRA?
It is only poor countries with rich resources or good strategic positioning to park an airbase that gets that treatment.

@Fukfacewillie Agreed but pic's seems to want a fight, he has a hate on for the USA and that I don't care for. We shouldn't have tried to "Nation Build" as that was doomed to failure but yeah, the bad guys needed to be silenced for good.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@spjennifer I blocked Pics. Too insane and full of hate.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@spjennifer That is a BS statement to shut down any criticism of US foreign policy and imperialism as "you hate America."
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@spjennifer You forget your president in 2001 said if we did not go along with his war we would be considered the enemy. Nice way to treat allies.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow What's false about it? You have a hate on for the USA and will use any excuse to bash us. What would you have proposed as the solution for getting the world rid of AQ and OBL then, wave sparklers at them and shower them with kindness?
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@spjennifer The idea that the only option was invasion and 20 years of war or let Al Qaeda run rampant.
Um no. Again you shut down any criticism of US foreign policy as "hating America."
That is either dishonest or very shortsighted and emotional.
It could have been handled like the US does every couple years with the Narco Cartels. But that doesn't lead to mineral wealth and airbases that can reason Russia and China.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow As per my comment:
You can clearly see I didn't agree with what they did by invading but doesn't obviate the simple fact that AQ and OBL needed to be removed, destroyed, annihilated, period. How many options did we have for accomplishing that with the Taliban in power and supporting both of them???

@spjennifer And then you presented a scenario that presented 20 years of war or doing nothing which is a BS dichotomy.
I told you how it could have easily been solved. But again this was not about Bin Laden. That was just the excuse. If the US really gave a shit about terrorism Saudi Arabia would be under occupation.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Oh hey, I have little doubts that Bush and Cheney sought to profit from the war, that was obvious but the "Narco cartels" don't have the 100k strong Taliban backing them a world away. There is little "strategic value" in Afghanistan, it's a backwards hellhole in the middle of nowhere that the Russians had already bailed out of.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow lol, I never advocated for "20 years of war" I simply said we could have accomplished more if we'd bombed them for 20 years, no "dichotomy" there. You're a complete fool if you think the Taliban are comparable to the Narco cartels, speaking of dichotomies, the Taliban are religious fanatics who will die for their cause, the cartels are petty drug dealers doing it for the money.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@spjennifer I am not the one who presented a dichotomy where it was that or nothing at all.
Actually if anything the Narcos are better trained and supplied. To consider the Narcos as just drug dealers is laughably off. The Zetas for example are Ex Mexican Special Forces trained by Green Berets.

spjennifer · 61-69, T
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow No, yours was just do nothing at all and anything we did was evil and wrong. Am sure the Narcos have lots of bad guys but are they wanting a Secular Islamic Republic ruled by Sharia Law? No, they are drug dealers with nowhere near the numbers that the Taliban have.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@spjennifer Again, you are misrepresenting my position. I have you a viable alternative that the US does regularly. And you turned it into all out war or do nothing.
Going off on tangents about religion has nothing to do with it. Bin Laden and El Chapo were just criminals. Full stop.
Lol. Al Qaeda according to US intelligence was 10 to 20 000 tops. With most having amateur hour training.
The Narcos have entire mercenary armies trained by the best forces in the world including their own Special Forces Units like Sinaloa's Anthrax Unit that has been trained by ex US, British, and Israeli Special Forces. They also have budgets that rival most small nations. Sinaloa alone probably has more money than the Mexican government.
It was never about Bin Laden. It was about mineral wealth and bases to threaten Russia and China. That is why they stuck around for 20 years trying to make it work.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Whatever you say, you're the apparent expert on Afghanistan AND the Mexican cartels, yes, we should have treated the Taliban the same as we do the cartels, that would have been very successful. Hell they should have made you President or JCS, you could have solved all the world's problems! Sure, it was all about "mineral wealth" the one that's still in the fucking ground after 20 years there! 🤡
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@spjennifer Lol. I am not the one gullible enough to believe a full scale invasion and 20 year occupation was just over a band of criminals.
Afghanistan has some of the richest mineral deposits in the world but US mining companies can't mine in a warzone and you can't effectively keep airfields in hostile territory which is why it was abandoned. Hell the bases bit was even in official plans earlier in the war.
I read alot and follow a journalist who is ex cartel so I do know a fair bit on the subject. Al Qaeda were amateur hour in comparison and could have been handled in much the same way. But that doesn't further US global empire and it doesn't make the POTUS look like a bad ass.
