@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow The US is responsible for destabilizing central and South American countries? The drug cartels. Narcostates and corrupt governments have nothing to do with it?
These are failed states and their citizens are economic refugees.
@HoraceGreenley Yeah, I'm sure the CIA overthrowing the government in Guatemala in the 1950s to keep them from nationalizing United Fruit had absolutely no effect on the country. Same with our propping up dictatorships because they were "anti-communist."
@LeopoldBloom So that stuff that happened well over 30 years ago is still influencing the region today.
And reducing the amount of Socialism in the region, such as stopping the nationalization of the biggest company in Guatemala has lead to the creation of narcostates.
@HoraceGreenley You people always bring up Chavez as if he means anything. It's like that's the only name you're aware of, because right-wing media constantly drums into your head how starving Venezuelans ate zoo animals or something.
Was Árbenz bad for Guatemala? Other than opposing United Fruit, that is.
Do you think Perón was good for Argentina? Was Pinochet good for Chile?
You really need to read a little history of the region beyond just bleating "Chavez baaaaad."
And if you blame the "drug trade," maybe if we legalized drugs, the illicit profit motive would be removed. Organized crime doesn't profit from alcohol or tobacco.
@HoraceGreenley I don't use drugs, I'm not a cokehead like everyone in the Trump family except Barron seems to be.
I didn't say "everything is America's fault;" I pointed out that U.S. actions in Central and South America have contributed to the problems seen there today. Like most conservatives, your understanding of history is rudimentary, and you don't see any options other than drooling reverence for the U.S. or wanting to destroy it, with nothing in between.
Since the War on Drugs hasn't reduced their use, and has destabilized the countries that either produce or market them, maybe we should try another strategy instead of following Puritanical guidelines for emotional reasons.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Horace is one of those people who thinks the only thing wrong with the US is that Democrats haven't been rounded up and executed. Don't you know that we were fighting communism? Those anti-communist dictators we installed were the good guys! We did the Native Americans a favor by taking their land and forcing them to assimilate. Same with the Africans who were fortunate enough to be enslaved and spared a horrible existence of living in huts and eating insects to survive.
There's no reasoning with brainwashed robots like him.
