Is Isreal simply protecting themselves

Israel is targeting the people of Gaza, apartment buildings, the media. The death count is 20 to 1. If you were punched in the face would it be fair to kill 5 people. Are the Palestinians caught in the middle of Hamas and Israel.

From what I've read, it seems fair to say that palestinians are caught in the center of Israel and Hamas. Neither of these warring sides really care about palestinian civilians.

It'd be great if Hamas would cease to exist. They have a pretty repugnant world view and stain the palestinians' plight. They realize the power imbalance of the situation and use human shields because of that.
