Is Isreal simply protecting themselves

Israel is targeting the people of Gaza, apartment buildings, the media. The death count is 20 to 1. If you were punched in the face would it be fair to kill 5 people. Are the Palestinians caught in the middle of Hamas and Israel.

To make a long story short, Gaza Palestinians are caught in the middle of Netanyahu and Hamas.
