Why were gay people so rare in TV as characters before they became one of the topics?

Why did the media companies create the illusion that America had almost no homosexual people?

Up until the 1990's and a bit later, there were still many Laws on the books against homosexuality, there still are in some places. Once a lot of those laws started to be abolished and being gay was no longer illegal, TV like the rest of the world began to adapt and accept. For Television it's all about selling advertising and since gay people of all sorts represent about 7-10% of the population, that was a huge market to tap into for them so they began to create characters that were gay in order to attract gay people to the TV shows so they could also watch the commercials and thus buy the stuff being advertised.

@spjennifer I agree about the laws, but didn't kids see dozens of murders each night on TV for decades?

@Stopmakingsense Well, violence, like sex, sells and the average person appears to be fascinated with violence so that's what they show. Yes, murder is still illegal, homosexuality, no longer...
