Why were gay people so rare in TV as characters before they became one of the topics?

Why did the media companies create the illusion that America had almost no homosexual people?

@jackson55 where's that? TV isn't as full of characters as it once was... Even Will and Grace is about half gay.

@Stopmakingsense Ever notice tv casts are 50% black, Hispanic or gay? Or a combination of the three.

@jackson55 Yes, because they've essentially been forced to put characters on that more closely represent the actual population. If we go back to the 50's, almost all TV characters were white which does not reflect our population.

@jackson55 I think if you're keeping track of what percentage of minority groups are portrayed in media, maybe the issue is yours.
