There are serious questions to be asked about the continued validity of the Electoral College.
Quite why it exists in the first place is down to the Founding fathers believing that THEY knew better than the population !
Might mean nothing in a case of an overwhelming majority.
But when it comes to close run elections, people you didn't vote for get to decide who your president is !!!
And that is somebody's definition of democratic !!!

If we were to use the popular vote then the areas with the most people would have the most votes, and therefore have the most power. What percentage of that map would you say is blue? It's enough to win the popular vote. I don't understand how anyone could look at that map and say "whoever won the blue parts should be president."

You're right though, you do need money. It's pricey to live on the coasts. Switching to the popular vote would most definitely leave the average person on the outside trying to look in.

240 years on and Democracy is still hard to apply to everyone !
Still. At least a Brit and a Yank can have a great debate without it deteriorating into some of the trash I've seen on here lately !!
@Picklebobble: I appreciate an intelligent conversation. I can see both sides of the argument in regards to the electoral college. I tend to lean towards getting rid of it being a bad idea. What's in place now isn't perfect, it's not going to make everyone happy, but it's probably our best option. IF anything were going to change, it sure wouldn't happen in time for this election anyways.

A tally, favoring Trump, will be derived, confirming how each state voted on Nov 8th ... and their certified vote summary.
You are correct ... it won't change anything ... fun conversation ... for the most part it is the human component of the electoral math .... it then goes to Congress to be accepted.

The role of the electoral college is being misconstrued ... they are to ensure the will of each state's vote has been respected. The electoral college would only differ with the state votes when something occurred in a state to make the totals inconsistent with what voters instructed ... or if a states vote is unclear.

It has no jurisdiction to supercede voter will. ... that is just urban legend.

@questionWeaver: Thank you for this, I'm understanding it now.
I think I'll keep it quite from one of my friends, I think it's better she writes letters to her electorate and gets her grief out then calling people "Russian Whores" online! It's been a week full of emotions, I hope things settle down next week.
Senorita ... good action plan ... it is good for people to vent ... we all need to ... the election process and surprise results will take time to adjust to.

Trump won and the electoral votes will reflect that.

If anything is permanent then its change

that remains to be seen. 50 states have agreeded to vote for the popular vote. so who knows.

i agree but nothing is final till after the electoral college votes. i don't have a chrystal ball and who knows hw those 50 states will effect the outcome. i do know that if it changes things then there will still be rooting, crying and upset but from the trump supporters. so nothing will really change until it is totally done. then hopefully things will calm down and the healing can begin.
@ladycae: Lady ... true the world is never certain ... I would like to put all this energy into things that help us all ... a functional healthcare insurance system is a good one!

As to reversing the election ... the Electoral college myth is just urban legend ... it is congress that accepts the vote ... over 3,000 of the 3,144 counties in the US landed Trump a victory.

There is no liklihood that any of the electors, nor any of the House members, for any of the states ... will entertain change ... the win territory was too large and too diverse.

There is no precedent, nor basis.

Lets open the doors to moving ahead ... new PA turnpike, an unnuanced healthcare insurance program .. .. and a reversal of all those regulations that has stopped business activity.

i have an issue with his removing the clean air act and cancelling the paris climate change treaty two things he said he would do. some regs are good. he has now said he will keep Obamacare just fix some issues it has. he is backing off of a lot of his campaign rhetoric.
