A gaudy real estate conman wins the 2016 election by appealing to Americans' fears about economic decline, immigration, growing nonwhite populations, and corruption. Said conman embarks on lunatic military adventures, deregulates numerous industries, cuts taxes (especially for the rich), and reduces both legal and illegal immigration.

The Democratic establishment puts up prelatively little resistance on policy, because in large part they agree. Intelligence services accuse the conman of colluding with the Russian government to win in 2016 and the Democrats run with it so they can look like they're fighting him without doing anything substantial. Predictably, little comes of this investigation ebcause it's built on flimsy factual grounds. And then Trump actually does attempt to cut an illegal deal with Ukraine, but the Republicans don't believe it when the evidence comes out, largely because they've already been desensitized to claims of corruption from the Russia probe.

And of course, that whole time, the conman is taking millions from foreign governments, but that mostly slips under the radar.

Once 2020 rolls around, the real estate conman botches disease control, runs an embarrassing election campaign, is forced to reveal the massive corruption in his tax returns, and still only loses by 38 electoral votes. Unable to accept failure, he launches dozens of frivolous lawsuits and throws the most hilarious tantrum I've ever seen.
