It's tough to say, without it all the focus would be on large population centers and what the politicians can do for them to get their votes. Where does that leave rural voters? But we can easily flip that and say the electoral college has us focusing on state that benefit the few and not the masses.
I see pros and cons to both

@MrGoodbar Urban/Rural voter stuff is irrelevant. The electoral college means the focus is on swing states. The electoral college disenfranchises plenty of rural voters too - like the millions of totally irrelevant Californian hillbillies.

@MarmeeMarch Close elections can happen no matter the system.

@MarmeeMarch These seem like fairly different things tbh - but secure online voting is also something that is possible to set up. Estonia has made it work.

@MarmeeMarch There was nothing fucked up about the voting this year. Trump's supporters thought it was, and that's only because he told them so without evidence. If he had won, the election would have been perfect.
You know it's true.

@MarmeeMarch Agreed. But at least the election was conducted fairly, despite what Trump and his supporters said. EVERYONE, from the courts to the election officials to the independent outside observers said so; even those from Russia.
