Biden: 'You're putting children in cages"

At best, it seems to be a dig that those facilities were built during the Obama administration. But yeah, it's a really dumb defence, Biden wasn't President and he could easily say those cages weren't set up for children, and most importantly it reveals Trump has missed the whole point about why it's cruel. Really awful optics

@plungesponge do only child lives matter? Holding adults is still wrong.

"Women and children first" is still a very powerful narrative in most people's minds. It's always seen as a greater tragedy when cruelty is inflicted on children than adults

@plungesponge I always thought that saying was stupid, I suppose. An adult female is just as valuable as an adult male. Men aren’t expendable creatures.

@SW-User The first "children in cages" controversy came around during the Obama era, when DHS simply didn't have the facilities to deal with the sudden surge of [i]unaccompanied [/i]children at the border. There was an outcry, while Obama admin scrambled to figure something out, and children got stuck in temporary detention.

The big difference was that under Obama this situation was not punitive, and children with parents were not separated from them. To resolve it, the administration rented some temporary facilities for a few months (at a relatively high cost, which created the "omg Obama gave each illegal kid 18k a month" meme that's still somehow going around), while beefing up their existing infrastructure.

So yeah, the temporary facilities were built under Obama, but they were used in a very different fashion, without the whole being dicks to people just to be dicks thing.

@SW-User It is a classic tactic, and it works because the explanation requires some knowledge of context, and at least moderate capacity for nuance.

It also shows that no matter what, they're going to be throwing a tantrum over Obama. Have inadequate facilities to deal with a sudden surge? Monster. Rent facilities on short term notice to house children because of said surge? Shoveling money to illegals. Deporting more illegal immigrants than any other president in history? Open borders.

Ironically, these are the same people that complain about others having TDS.
