The parties of a long time ago are no longer the same thing, just like the humans of millions of years ago are not the same genetic make up and structure as us now:

Also, the claim is only partly true. The Republican party had a lot of northern Democrats which supported the end of slavery, Democrats were not all united on that fact.
Furthermore, blaming Democrats pushes responsibility off republican's bad behavior now, just like if we're talking about something Democrats did wrong and they blame conservatives.
