That's what I call "living in the past". Who supports the KKK now, though?

The parties have not always been the same throughout history.

At the turn of the 20th century, the Democratic party stood for laissez-faire capitalism, pro-business policies, small government, and populism, all things associated with today's Republicans. (At the same time, Republicans stood for big government, social reform, and even spawned the "Progressive party"). Funny. Today's Republicans act like "progressive" is the worst thing you can be yet they are the party that created the term!

In the mid-twentieth century, both parties were mixed. There were conservative Democrats, liberal Republicans, etc. But as the Democratic party embraced civil rights, the conservative wing of the Democratic party, which was mainly in the South, began to leave and join the Republicans to stand against civil rights.

So really, the argument is asinine.
