Why has 'socialism' become a dirty word ?

Because Republicans don’t know what it means and use it as a general insult for any policy supported by Democrats. In fact, many of their own policies, from pandemic checks to farm subsidies, are much nearer to socialism than, say, the Affordable Care Act.
