Why has 'socialism' become a dirty word ?

Because hardly anyone knows what it means, including people who support it. When a conservative uses it, they mean “anything to the left of Ronald Reagan.”

Socialism is defined as the nationalization of private industry. You can also socialize specific aspects of society. For example, in the US, we have a socialized military and socialized law enforcement.
@LeopoldBloom This is mostly right although your idea of socialism is based more on the Leninist idea o that socialism should be implemented by the government doing more stuff with the government being a vanguard party which has some merits. Worker owned and operated co-operatives are also a socialist idea that goes against the more top down hierarchy. Personally I think a mix of both is the way to go.

Fun fact, the welfare state was invented by a conservative right winger to basically counter socialist revolution. See Otto Von Bismark.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I find the ideas of Murray Bookchin to be very attractive, but you're right, it probably requires a combination of top down and bottom up. Too bad Rojava didn't last, it would have been interesting to see how it developed.
@LeopoldBloom Murray Bookchin definitely had some interesting ideas. As for Rojava it is still around, they just lost alot of ground to the Turks because as usual the US decided the Kurds are expendable. Everyone there was expecting this. This is not even remotely a surprise to the people there. The Russians have certainly screwed up Erdogan's plans for the region.
