Don't blame the experts you put between dismissive quotation-marks!
Those doctors and scientists are experts in their fields but can only advise and plead. They have no control over those wilfully ignoring them. Regulations are the task of the politicians, police and judiciary.
Not just political protests either.
I am told elsewhere that a huge annual bikers' rally that attracts (supposedly or actually) many thousands of rider from all over the US was still intending to go ahead despite everything.
To be fair I don't know the outcome of that rally, but it seems odd anyone would even still consider holding it when all manner of cultural and sporting events everywhere else are being cancelled even as far ahead as Christmas.
