Popular sentiment these days is very off the mark.

People have been this viscous about Politics and disagreements ever since there was Politics, It's just that in the olden days it wasn't littered across the front pages of news and on blast in such a way that it was so visible. too many people act like Racism and Sexism for instance came along with Colored TV but the reality was they were there long before, all the news did differently was suddenly start to report about them. The tensions we experience today are merely a product of their increased visibility, nothing more. people didn't LOSE their Civility when Donald Trump was elected, we never WERE civil to begin with, it's just the election made it visible.

To a point.

The anonymity of the internet has probably made us less civil.
@beckyromero people were insufferable cunts to me before the internet and they're insufferable cunts to me now.

No. Nothing's changed. People were always this awful. Perhaps you just didn't notice.
