I Like Politics

So tired of the onslaught and assaults daily that are supposed to make me ashamed. I'm not a sheep as sheep are weak and not buying into the BS. The facts are:

What is privilege?
Privilege is wearing $200 sneakers when you’ve never had a job.
Privilege is wearing $300 Beats headphones while living on public assistance.
Privilege is having a Smartphone with a data plan which you receive no bill for.
Privilege is living in public subsidized housing where you don’t have a water bill, where rising property taxes and rents and energy costs have absolutely no effect on the amount of food you can put on your table.
Privilege is the ability to go march against and protest against anything that triggers you, without worrying about calling out of work and the consequences that accompany such behavior.
Privilege is having as many children as you want, regardless of your employment status, and be able to send them off to daycare or school you don’t pay for.
Privilege is sending your kids to school early for the before school programs and breakfast, and then keeping them there for the after school program...all at no cost to you....paid for by the people who DO HAVE TO DEAL WITH RISING TAXES AND COSTS!...you know, us so-called “PRIVILEGED” the ones who pay while you take, take, TAKE!
I’d rather you said thanks and went on your way.

Teaching in college I saw so much of that. Some students who sell plasma to stay in school working hard to get an education. Some student (and I'll leave the description up to you) get free no qualification scholarships and waste their time at school. Their scholarships also included, books and meals. They were always my worst students.

Oh dear.
This is well said but badly thought.
Being poor and getting some government assistance does not give a person what is meant by privilege in these discussions.

@Suomynona but in this discussion the people are not poor, it's not aimed at poor people it's aimed at the people pretending to be poor so that they qualify for handouts, poor people do not own $200 sneakers.
@goldenorchid OK but can we agree then that you are talking about a very small proportion of people receiving handouts? Most people receiving government assistance are not "pretending to be poor", they really are poor and they live like poor people live.

And actually though some poor people might reasonably buy $200 sneakers. They're not buying cars or houses. They need shoes that will last.

Meanwhile the discourse around recognizing privilege is about looking at things that those of us who are relatively well off take for granted. Simple example that just came up on the radio here: after summer vacation, middle-class children remember more of the reading and writing and math from the previous school year than poor children do. Why? Because middle-class children have activities during the summer that reinforce some of those skills, and poor children often do not. That's privilege. There's nothing wrong with it. Everybody should have it. But it is a fact that some of us have privilege and some don't.

You are so right!!!
Now you're getting personal. You're attacking my life.

I have all those things and have never worked a day in my life.

And I'm white.
