Are houses of worship 'essential'?

NO. Firstly: Worship means to obey utterly, which should be done at all times, anywhere. They ought to be referred to as "places of praise" instead.
secondly, any spirituality (or its anti-thesis) is a profoundly private thing and should be kept within the house-hold, if not kept as a personal and unspoken secret.
@Anonymartyr I have my faith, but because nobody knows what to label me with, everybody treats me the same whether Christian, Muslim, Jew or Pagan (etc.).
