Re opening is a crazy idea...

... Unless you have proper testing. The virus is still at large and there is a decline in new casrs BECAUSE of the lockdown. This doesnt prove the lockdown is unnecessary but that it is necessary. If you open up, you need to be able to isolate and control the virus or its Groundhog Day for the black death.

You stay locked down ..... anyone not ready should stay locked down
But the rest of us are ready to live again
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Miklee02 Its not about me. Or about you. Even if you are not high risk you can spread the virus.
Miklee02 · 51-55, F
@Burnley123 it’s ok really we need herd immunity at this point
@Miklee02 unfortunately you being ready to live means other people are going to have to be ready to die.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Miklee02 Britain and america are miles from that. To go for herd immunity, youd needs 20% of people constantly infected over four months and also pray that 2% of the population don't die. My mum is high risk fwiw.
Miklee02 · 51-55, F
@Discotheque the high risk people need to be locked down ..... and it will always need to be that way forevermore now
Miklee02 · 51-55, F
@Burnley123 I respect your opinion...... I have my own
🤷🏻‍♀️

@Miklee02 Britain tried a herd immunity strategy early on but changed whem they realised it was gonna kill a whole percent of the population, at the best modelling.

@Miklee02 yesss!! We are!!!!
Miklee02 · 51-55, F
@Chevy454 well my state locked us down another month 🙄 grrrr
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Miklee02 I respect your opinion too. Im also pissed off inside and worried about the econony. The alternative is worse though.
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
Florida is on the edge of some openings. I hope@Miklee02
@Miklee02 I understand there’s a real need to find the right balance between the death and damage caused by the virus and on the other hand the death and damage caused by lockdown. While finding the right balance we need to do all we can to prevent the health services from being swamped.
Miklee02 · 51-55, F
@Chevy454 just be smart right?
Miklee02 · 51-55, F
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
@Miklee02 Yes. I’m really not that worried.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Miklee02 Everyone thinks they are smart but people still get it. The curve is flattened under lockdowm but it isnt decreasing. Open the lockdown and everyone gets it and hospitals are overwhelmed. This is precisely why the uk abondoned herd immunity.
@Burnley123 The truth is we have created a way of being for ourselves that demands that we return and engage the economy to simply exist at a personal level, and to keep basic social systems together. It really isn't a balance of the right to engage the economy and have a public life and the responsibility to isolate so as to not harm oneself and others. Our societies are constructed according to our values, and we do not value backstopping basic needs to preserve personal safety and livelihoods until we work this out.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@CopperCicada It shouldnt be either/or safety vrs economy. There is an answer and that is for the state to adopt a war economy and underwrite basic needs.

The fifty fifty alternative that people are suggesting would certainly result in a big second wave and without testing, its impossible to isolate
@Burnley123 There is a big difference between "what is" and "what out to be".

You are right. It need not be a choice of personal safety over the economy. That is what people like Mother Jones fought for.

But I'm not seeing the values in American to underwrite social and economic survival.

That is why I worded my comment as I did. "... we have created a way of being for ourselves..." This is the product of contemporary American values right now.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@CopperCicada Even Britain is underwriting the salaries of private sector workers by 80 percent and we are a Conservative country. The democrats should be pushing for that. Im not saying its easy, just that there are other choices.

Judging by the comments here, a lot of non republicans are getting sick of the lockdown. I worry that public opinion will break it in your country and the conseqiences would be horrific. I hope im wrong and wish you well.
@Burnley123 I think there is a difference between "being sick of the lockdown" and knowing that their $1200 stimulus check isn't going to carry them for 18 months until a vaccine is developed. Nor is the maximum unemployment benefit of $275/week for no more than 23 weeks in Florida. People are having a hell of a time just applying on line in this state.

Like I worded it. The way of being we've made for ourselves.

There is no way we'll underwrite 80% of wages.
