President Donald Trump on Saturday said the unproven drug combination he has referred to as a coronavirus treatment could be preferable to placing Americans suffering from COVID-19 on any of the 10,000 ventilators states have requested from a federal stockpile.

Trump, who has no medical training, has for several weeks mentioned a combination of an anti-malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, and azithromycin as a potential cure for the virus that the World Health Organization has classified as a global pandemic.
While there are a number of ongoing clinical trials testing the efficacy of those and other medications to see if any will be effective against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, medical experts have cautioned against the use of any drug therapies that have not been proven to work in a controlled trial.

Then he suggested that leaders in states such as New York were responsible for shortages because they "had chances of stockpiling a lot of ventilators," long before the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 but didn't. This, after accusing NYC of "stockpiling" ventilators.

It was reported here that a couple had taken his advice and the gent had died and the lady was in a very serious condition. This was over a week ago and I have heard no more.

@Zeusdelight This was a couple who decided to take fish anti parasite medication which among many other things contained some amount of hydroxychloroquine. They did this after Fox and Friends started telling people they had to be "proactive" and essentially advocated people start self medicating.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow The crazy shit is that there is an entire subculture of people in US buying fish meds - especially antibiotics. These are probably the same types. It completely boggles the mind.

@QuixoticSoul Fish antibiotics are actually a different beast. What they drank is more like a tank cleaner and anti parasite cocktail. Antibiotics for fish in the US and Canada are essentially identical to antibiotics for humans. The only difference is the packaging and dosage obviously. That is one of the marvels of capitalist efficiency. You can put the same product in a different box and call it something new.

I am guessing you are probably referring to the prepper movement which is actually somewhat international. I consider myself to be part of the even smaller lefty subset. Like any subculture you have nutjobs and those are the ones National Geographic decided to make a TV show about a few years ago. In fact some of the more rational people out of that community are donating supplies and following the isolation protocols removing themselves from the equation of stressing the healthcare system. Heck I know of at least one who sent out a general call to the community to donate any extra PPE they have on hand and offer their knowledge to those who don't have that mentality of being prepared for stuff like this.

This incident was a couple who did not prepare (no blame here) that some idiots at Fox exploited their panic with fatal consequences.
