Why does America stick to a bipartisan approach to democracy?

Tradition has its own inertia, especially when it wields power because it resists change. Our two-party system is not enshrined in the constitution and it makes little sense to me. The fastest growing voting block in the USA are those unaffiliated with either of the two major parties.
