Why does America stick to a bipartisan approach to democracy?

Because all of our elections select one candidate each and each person gets exactly one vote. If a third party runs in that system and gains serious ground, they'll just split up the vote, screw over the candidate they're more similar to, and possibly trigger some undemocratic contingency. There's really no way to have more parties without changing the voting system to ranked choice, parliamentary, or something along those lines.

Also, the two party system keeps the politicians involved preeetty comfortable. All the Dems have to do to avoid losing influence is keep their base convinced that they're better than the Republicans and vice versa. This is easy given the magnitude of the divide there. The Republicans can suck Saudi cock and cut funding for education as much as they want so long as they don't do something "worse" than supporting abortion rights. The Democrats can cut social programs and pass spying bills as much as they want as long as they don't do something worse than stopping trans people from taking a shit in the appropriate bathroom. So the politicians naturally favor this ludicrous system.
