What are they protesting for?

@SW-User
Why are they protesting?
The government has just passed a long-mooted law to fast-track citizenship applications for refugees from surrounding countries who are Hindu, Christian, Parsi, Jain or Buddhist – but not Muslim.
Critics argue the legislation is unconstitutional and undermines India’s secular ethos. In contrast to neighbouring Pakistan, an Islamic republic, India’s founding leaders were adamant that their country would not have an official religion. More than 80% of the country is Hindu, but India also has the third largest Muslim population in the world and one of the oldest Christian communities outside the Middle East.
People in India’s north-east, protective of their distinctive cultures and long suspicious that those cultures might be diluted by migrants, are also unhappy. They say they do not want refugees from neighbouring Bangladesh to become citizens of their states, whatever their religion. Some of the fiercest protests against this bill have been in north-eastern states such as Assam.
This week the demonstrations were fuelled by scenes of police beating protesters from Aligarh and Jamia university who were demonstrating against the law. Footage of young people, including many women in religious garments, being attacked by officers or stuck in a library that was being teargassed have shocked Indians and crystallised the concerns of opponents of the prime minister, Narendra Modi, that this government is eroding civil liberties.

@SW-User Seems legit. But however citizenships right are mandatory. Otherwise people from neighbouring countries of India and will settle illegally. It is good because it will control population.

SW-User
@SW-User We don't have problem with the act itself
But we have a problem with discrimination of a specific community

SW-User
They can implement it but not on the basis of religion

SW-User
@SW-User it's not about religion. It's about illegal migration. Perhaps the opposing side must be majority of illegal immigrants.
JBird · F
@SW-User the problem is they are filtering immigrants on the basis of religion, ie Muslims, not where they come from. Also they take away citizenship rights from Muslims whose ancestors are from those countries even though they have all required documents such as passports.
The government is currently ruled by Hindu extremists whose main agenda to make India as Hindu country

SW-User
@JBird Those immigrants never applied for citizenship?
JBird · F
@SW-User yes, they have. But they were denied since 2016. They have been sent to detention camps instead

SW-User
@JBird they can apply again now?
JBird · F
@SW-User nope. Not with new bill.

SW-User
@JBird so they should go back to their home country.
JBird · F
@SW-User yes, but the people who have immigrated years ago can't do that because they don't have anywhere else to go other than India. And that's where people are coming to protest.

SW-User
@JBird That's sounds though. They should have applied legally before moving :/
JBird · F
@SW-User they did it legally. But they were denied by the government on basis that they were Muslims and sent to detention camps.

SW-User
@SW-User Also they're putting people in detention camps over small spelling mistakes.
In India where government officials don't even work properly they expect people to show documents with accurate spellings
They don't even Care if your documents are lost by any cause.

@JBird I wonder if there is difference between Indian Muslims and Muslims from country like Bangladesh and Pakistan. Because that would be a different provision. People who were born India are Indians but who wants migrate are not allowed because of the country issues. Some people who crossed border illegally and settled are not Indians but they settled and allowed their relatives to come in which is different as well. Why don't the government let them apply if they settled for longer periods. Newly moved immigrants should follow the law.

SW-User
@SW-User Spelling mistake in documents? One must carry proper documents when they settle abroad. For those who were not much educated or didn't had provision should given some relief or period where they can re-apply for documents. Otherwise it would be a crazy scene. 😔
JBird · F
@SW-User this is not question of following rules by immigrants as that's not a major problem in India unlike in America. Okay, we understand the immigration issues but why only to Muslims? I mean there are Hindus and Christians immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Why are they not going through the screening? The reason is government is currently ruled by a Hindu extremists group who is trying to drive out non Hindus from India to establish a complete Hindu country. They are now discriminating Muslims under the name of terrorism.

SW-User
@JBird That's a bad situation. Hopefully government fix this up. Since religion should not be a matter in terms of immigration.
JBird · F
@SW-User no, they won't. Protests are happening all over the country. Hundreds were attacked and killed by police under government's orders.

SW-User
@JBird 😬😨
@SW-User sounds just like the scandal on our own Mexican/ US border.
The double standard and secret discrimination is nauseating and it is killing people, mostly the children, many have died so far...thousands are missing and on it goes...but with money and papers no problem
Emma Lazarus would be weeping on her own grave if she know how this all tuned out. Give me your tired your poor..
REALLY.
