Why are Indians protesting?
The government has just passed a long-mooted law to fast-track citizenship applications for refugees from surrounding countries who are Hindu, Christian, Parsi, Jain or Buddhist – but not Muslim.

Critics argue the legislation is unconstitutional and undermines India’s secular ethos. In contrast to neighbouring Pakistan, an Islamic republic, India’s founding leaders were adamant that their country would not have an official religion. More than 80% of the country is Hindu, but India also has the third largest Muslim population in the world and one of the oldest Christian communities outside the Middle East.


People in India’s north-east, protective of their distinctive cultures and long suspicious that those cultures might be diluted by migrants, are also unhappy. They say they do not want refugees from neighbouring Bangladesh to become citizens of their states, whatever their religion. Some of the fiercest protests against this bill have been in north-eastern states such as Assam.

This week the demonstrations were fuelled by scenes of police beating protesters from Aligarh and Jamia university who were demonstrating against the law. Footage of young people, including many women in religious garments, being attacked by officers or stuck in a library that was being teargassed have shocked Indians and crystallised the concerns of opponents of the prime minister, Narendra Modi, that this government is eroding civil liberties.

@SW-User It is eroding civil liberties. But this world never much respected "civil liberties" compared to corporate profits.

But when millions of people revolt due to globalized inhumane policies SOMEONE has to reset the sanity-meter.

I am with them all in spirit, and I pray for international workable solutions or this stuff is just a TEST CASE...

@Dewms Not fast track citizenship. The law allows Minorities who have fled from Islamic neighbour countries to India to get Indian citizenship. For the same reason many non-Muslim minorities flee to West due to persecution in Islamic states. Muslims are majority in Pakistan/ Bangladesh and India isn't bound to give their majority citizenship on that persecution groud. Also, scores of bangladeshi Muslims illegally enter through Eastern zone and that disturbs Eastern demographics. Govt wants to identify them.

And Some refugees(Mostly hindus,sikhs, christians, Shia and ahmadiya muslims) are here because of religion persecution..
They won't give citizenship to muslims
Not only muslims
but hindus are often persecuted n srilanka
They won't give citizenship to those tamils too because they're ot from pakistan , Bangladesh or Afghanistan I mean neighbouring Islamic countries.
It's just the dirty politics Bjp playing
If Hindus or other minorities are persecuted there we don't have problem taking them in India
But you can't do the same to muslims of India what pakistan is doing to hindus

@SW-User these people don't want to talk about the negativity that the so called peaceful community has spread around the globe.... They call themselves minority when they are more than 20 % in India.... And to add to their hypocrisy these people want to impose their religion forcefully... This is what happened to Kashmiri pandits and what's happening in West Bengal.... There is no end to the list....

India’s majority religion is Hinduism, with around 80% of the population. Every other religion is a minority, yes.

@QuixoticSoul yes.... But in India only this religion has been appeased for vote banks.... There is no problem with people living in any area except for non Muslims in Muslim majority area...... Read about Kashmiri pandits... You would know what is their real agenda....

They’re the fourth largest religion in India, with a bit under 2% of the population. And yes, a minority.
