It's even more funny when you realize the chicken crossing the road joke is an existentialist nightmare. Originally the chicken was crossing the road to get to the "other side." This means essentially the afterlife, which could be a metaphor for Boris's political suicide since you know the chicken committed suicide and all.
I like to think the general public will notice Boris skipping over the questions. Maybe it will hurt him or maybe the general public is more idiotic than not, which is scary to imagine.
