According to our Labor Department, it celebrates the labor movement, as well as social and economic contributions working people have made to our country.

@bijouxbroussard Surely it's an anachronism now though ? And the reason for it in the first place was actually little more than a sop to trade unionists. (As well as being introduced to counter the traditional socialist/communist European May Day celebration.)

@RodionRomanovitch Sshhhh. Even if it’s not really taken seriously, it’s still a day off for a lot of people. Don’t tempt them to take this away, too.

@SmartKat Unbelievably , some of the posters here think that's my motivation !

@RodionRomanovitch Well, a LOT of people don’t get the day off today. Medical and emergency services? Makes sense. Pharmacies. Newscasters.
But all the restaurants, stores, and tourist attractions are fully staffed today - so the business owners can make money off the people who *did* get the day off. If we really wanted to honor Labor Day, we wouldn’t buy anything - so the stores could close and those people could have the day off, too.
