Though, it's likely that something was whispered in his ear to exacerbate the desperation.

What could possibly be whispered in his ear that would exacerbate his desperation any more than already knowing he’s never going to be free again? This is a guy who lived a life of luxury and is now facing the rest of his life in a small box. I can’t imagine anything that anyone could say to him that would be any worse than his obvious fate. @JoeyFoxx
