why are republicans red and democrats blue... red is the classic color of the political left...

Apperently it has to do with TV.
And these colours are fairly recent, since 2000.

But I'm actually intrested of someone that knows previous elections? If there was some association with colour?

@Kwek00 For a brief period it was common to use red for the incumbent party and blue for the opposition party.
